cloud computing

The history of cloud computing goes back a long way, to the 1960s, when time-sharing was first conceptualized in terms of remote job entry. The 'data center' model, by which users submitted jobs to operators for processing on mainframes, was mainly in use back then. This was the exploratory and experimental stage of finding various ways to make large-scale computing power available to more users through time-sharing, optimization of infrastructure, platform, and applications, and bringing about efficiency in services to end-users.

Cloud computing refers to the on-demand availability of system resources-primarily data storage (cloud storage), computing power, without a direct active management by the user. Large clouds have their functions distributed over several locations, each location being a data center. Cloud computing relies on resource sharing, achieving coherence and often using a pay-as-you-go model, which can lead to reducing capital expenses but also to unexpected operating expenses for users.
